God the Peacemaker | What does God intend for his broken creation? In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, Graham A. Cole seeks to answer this question by setting the atoning work of the cross in the broad framework of God's grand plan to restore the created order, and places the story of Jesus, his cross and empty tomb within it.   Today’s verse reveals that a peacemaker is one who has received peace by acknowledging his or her wretchedness before God, and through repentance and faith has been adopted into God’s family. Following this, the peacemaker enters the Father’s business of spreading the full message of the gospel to others so that they may also know true peace.

Ken Sande's book The Peacemaker is designed to help resolve conflict and be restored to one another. The concept may seem simple, and a lot of what Sande says is common sense, but it is still a book that should be required reading, especially in the church/5.

Down through the ages, there have been many peacemakers, but the greatest peacemaker the world has ever known is God. What has God done that qualifies Him to be such a great peacemaker.

Consider Paul’s words found in the book of Romans. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. In God the Peacemaker: How Atonement Brings Shalom Graham A. Cole argues that shalom captures the true essence of the term "atonement" and that therefore standing as the central goal of Christ's death was the atonement or reconciliation of Christ with all things.

But this is no trite expression of the human conception of peace as the absence of Brand: IVP Academic. By the sovereign work of God’s grace, rebel human beings are born again, and brought from rebellion to faith, and made into children of God.

To be honest, I think Louis Berkhof’s treatment of the atonement in his Systematic Theology is better, and George Smeaton’s book on the atonement is more detailed and comprehensive, but Cole’s addition to this topic is one worth reading as well.

Since we have become paradoxically the glory and garbage of the universe. Graham A. Cole, Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, offers students and scholars an overview of the doctrine of the atonement, including the ongoing debates surrounding this doctrine.

Using the narrative of Scripture as his guide, Cole paints a rich theological picture of atonement as God’s project for restoring shalom to a sinspoiled creation. The New Studies in Biblical Theology Series (NSBT) is a one of my favorite series of monographs.

This God, revealed in Scripture, has a project. Central to the divine strategy is Christ, His coming, and His cross. The troubles and calamities will end.

The cross. Therefore, this particular peacemaking between God and man is one-sided. We are reconciling people to God or better still, God is reconciling people to Himself through us.

Peacemaking lays the groundwork for authentic peace to rule. Jesus was a peacemaker (the cross is evidence that He did not avoid conflict) and He calls us to be peacemakers. There's a great story in Chapter 6 of the book of Judges that illustrates this realization.

The story goes that the Israelites were being terrorized by the people of Midian because they offended God. For instance, as soon as the Israelites had finished sowing their fields, the Midians would swoop in and destroy the produce and even the livestock.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers." But it often seems like conflict and disagreement are unavoidable. Serious, divisive conflict is everywhere-within families, in the church, and out in the world.

And it can seem impossible to overcome its negative force in our lives. In The Peacemaker, Ken Sande presents a comprehensive and practical theology for conflict resolution /5(20).
